Formed in 1997, D-Generation X was the WWF's answer to the antics of the nWo over in WCW.

The snooty aspects of Triple H's character were removed, and he started clowning around with a much more brash than before Shawn Michaels. Completing the set, Chyna acted as the pair's bodyguard.

Rick Rude was even part of DX briefly, but his more serious persona didn't really fit the juvenile feel of the group. Seeking laughs and yet still being cast as heels, Michaels and Triple H added a few nuances to their act that were designed to irritate more than catch on.

Amongst those added, the infamous crotch chop and the catchphrase, 'Suck It' became the most popular. Probably because they were so unique and full of 'Attitude', both caught on with the watching audience, and D-Generation X exploded enough for a second incarnation of the group (once Shawn Michaels had departed) in 1998.

To this day, the gimmick is still over, despite WWE operating in a more child-friendly environment.
