Dustin Rhodes debuted on TNA as himself, ambushing his former friend and tag team partner Chris Harris, who Dustin claimed stole his spot. Fans were ready to write this off as a rather default character and feud, until Dustin cut a promo propelled by his natural charisma. He revealed that since aged four he’d had a split personality.

Black Reign debuted against Chris Harris at Hard Justice 2007. The new character had shades of Goldust though more gothic. His outfit looked like a tribal body tattoo with the colours inverted. Black Reign hailed "from the deepest darkest corner of his mind" and was given new heavy metal theme music with ominous garbled chanting.

The debut match showed Black Reign as a vicious in-ring competitor. He bust Harris open early in the bout and attacked three referees until being disqualified. In a brutal post-match attack, Black Reign handcuffed Harris to the ropes, and despite the effort of numerous security guards, nailed him in the head with a steel spike eliciting "holy s**t" chants.

Black Reign found a place in TNA’s hardcore angles, competing in the likes of the 10,000 Tacks match and Silent Night, Bloody Night match.
