10 Most WTF Heel Turns In Wrestling History

7. Michael Cole Turns On The King (WWE, 2010)

The role of the play-by-play announcer has always been a babyface position. That commentator leads the broadcasts and tends to stand for fairness, and call the action right down the middle while the colour commentator can add a bit of sizzle to the steak with their heelish observations. In an odd move in 2010, Michael Cole became the heel commentator of NXT, constantly belittling and burying Daniel Bryan from the headset. After this, he started rooting for Miz on RAW, but during the rest of the show he would play it straight and call the action like a regular play-by-play guy. It culminated in Cole costing beloved commentator Jerry Lawler a WWE Title shot against The Miz which, in turn, led to a WrestleMania showdown between the broadcast partners. While Cole was good when it came to playing an annoying cretin, the fact that during the other 85% of the show he went back to calling matches regularly caused a huge disconnect for the audience and, thankfully, didn€™t last too long. After the feud with Lawler, Cole flip-flopped between babyface and heel and even had a feud with Jim Ross. Thankfully his heel run finally came to an end when he was tasked with updating the audience about Jerry Lawler€™s condition following his real-life heart attack, something he did with great sincerity and concern. As awful as his heel run was, though, at least we got the 'Cole Mine' out of it.
