Whether it was due to The Hitman still being depressed over Montreal or the company's ineptitude, Bret Harts run in WCW was a bit of a letdown. He never really seemed to gain a lot of momentum and then about 18 months into the run, his brother Owen died and he was off TV for months. In October 1999, he became the WCW World Champion and seemed to be easing back into the role of babyface hero once more. Then two months later in December he randomly turned heel on Goldberg, aligning himself with Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Jeff Jarrett to form a new version of the nWo. The team just never felt like it fitted or made sense. It was a ragtag group of people who were put together just because it gave them something to do. Bret's heel turn was forced, for sure. Sadly for Bret, his career would end not long after in January 2000 after an errant kick from Bill Goldberg at Starrcade 1999 led to multiple concussion issues. Bret didnt look like he wanted to be in the nWo, Hall and Nash were going through the motions and Jarrett was just being pushed too far up the card, too soon.
