10 New Directions After WWE Battleground 2016
2. Raw Title Tournament
Of course, SmackDown’s women aren’t the only ones without a
title to compete for. After Dean Ambrose overcame the challenge of both Seth
Rollins and Roman Reigns on Sunday, over on Raw they’re currently lacking a
major men’s singles title.
It’s difficult to imagine them not changing this situation, but the more important question centres over how exactly they’ll execute the introduction of a new title.
Previously, you’d have expected to see Rollins and Reigns thrash it out for a vacant title, possibly the old World Heavyweight Championship. But Reigns has much less of a shout at deserving that opportunity after taking the pinfall from Ambrose at Battleground.
That leaves Rollins the standout candidate, but to simply award him a reintroduced belt (while drawing parallels to the Triple H situation of 2002) would feel rather anti-climactic.
So for me, it seems like we’re going to need a tournament of some sort to determine a worthy champion. Ultimately, it’ll likely be Rollins winning such a tournament, possibly even facing Reigns in the final.
But that would at least be more exciting than merely handing the belt to someone.
