10 Non-Wrestlers AEW Should Sign
6. Earl Hebner
Role: Referee
Despite being a not inconsiderable 69 (nice) years of age, Earl Hebner remains the most famous wrestling referee of all time. Whether you put this down to his visibility during the Attitude Era or his role in the Montreal Screwjob is a matter for debate but, either way, he's the industry's most recognisable man in the middle.
Cody and the boys have already called upon his services to referee the NWA Championship match at All In, and a second appearance is rumoured for Double or Nothing. This despite working a date earlier in the year advertised as his final ever appearance and introducing his daughter Katie in something resembling a passing of the torch moment. No word yet on if she's taken up the gig full-time.
While there's every possibility he just wants a quiet life away from the ring now, if Hebz is up for acting in some sort of ceremonial "Senior Official" capacity for AEW it would help legitimise some of the storytelling. Bumps and screwy finishes always hold up a little bit better when the refs have some sort of personality, and introducing Hebner is an easy way to speed that process along.
