10 Odd One Out Wrestling Champions

6. Gillberg

The WWE Light Heavyweight Championship never had the same promise as its WCW counterpart. Between 1981 and 1995 it was used to cement a working relationship between the then-WWF and the Universal Wrestling Association. It was defended exclusively on UWA shows.

After UWA shut down, and the belt was one of eight titles unified to create NJPW's J-Crown Championship, WWE requested the title be returned as a prize for the company's 1997 rebooted Light Heavyweight Division.

While the division is often rubbished, not helped by WWE dropping its name in favour for the WCW equivalent, it's championship was held by future World Champions in the shape of Christian and Jeff Hardy, in-ring technician Dean Malenko, and two-time WWE Hall of Famer X-Pac. In fact, all but one champion reign had merit; the Era of Gillberg.

Gillberg was an anaemic parody of WCW star attraction Goldberg that mocked everything from his signature armband tattoos to his spine-tingling entrance. Making matters all the worse, due to the reboot, Gillberg is the longest reigning Light Heavyweight Champion, holding the strap for 453 days (17 November 1998 – 8 February 2000), though, he only defended the championship successfully twice on TV, retaining against Marc Mero and Matt Hardy.
