10 Opening Wrestling PPV Matches Better Than The Main Event
5. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Dean Malenko (Starrcade 1997)
Main Event: Sting vs. Hollywood Hogan
There has been no shortage of masterful exhibitions between Eddie and Dean, stretching back to their days with ECW in the mid-90s. And this list could easily be populated by one or two of their other matches -- especially their battle earlier in the year at Uncensored -- but props must be given to their meeting at WCW's version of WrestleMania for the Cruiserweight title.
Bubbling way, way below the mega hype of Sting vs. Hogan in the main event, Eddie and Dean had cultivated one of WCW's greatest rivalries, not based on over-the-top soap opera drama, but on fierce competition. They simply wanted to be better than each other. And it showed in this match.
Commentator Dusty Rhodes called it a "match of destiny", but it was really more like a match of chemistry. Very few competitors had the kind of connection that these two did in the ring, and they used that chemistry to craft a graceful, artful display that completely went against WCW's trend of style over substance during that time period.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited main event between two of the industry's biggest icons was a sluggish, mostly one-sided affair that tied a bow on itself with an ill-conceived, botched finish.
Despite the announcers constantly talking over the action to hype the main event, Eddie vs. Dean stole the show.
