10 Opening Wrestling PPV Matches Better Than The Main Event
2. The Rockers Vs. The Orient Express (Royal Rumble 1991)
Main Event: Royal Rumble
Even though it's tough to compare the Royal Rumble to any other type of match -- simply because there are way too many players and way too long of a runtime to do that fairly -- an exception had to be made for this one.
This tag team match is still considered one of the greatest non-Rumble matches in the history of the event, and it deserves every bit of praise it gets. It stands as a testament to what four guys can accomplish when they throw the book out the window and get truly creative inside of the ring.
There were more innovative spots and clever combos inside of this 20 minutes than WWE had in the entirety of 1990. It was intricate and expertly-crafted from start to finish. Speaking of which...that finish! A slingshot reversal into a sunset flip for the unexpected three-count? Are you kidding me? It doesn't get much better than that.
As for the Rumble match, it was essentially a duplicate of the previous year, but with a less stellar cast. The Hulkster won for the second year in a row, but considering the lack of star power in the ring for most of the event, the finish was never in doubt. The amount of dead time in this Rumble stretched longer than the entirety of the opening match, as well.
