10 Past WrestleMania Main Events Worse Than Reigns Vs. Triple H

7. Bret "Hitman" Hart Vs. Yokozuna - WrestleMania IX

WWE in 1993 was clearly a company rebuilding, the star power of the 1980s was gone and Vince McMahon was in need of new faces to carry his promotion into the future. His first choice was Bret "Hitman" Hart, the heavyweight champion of the world and arguably the best wrestler on the planet. When Yokozuna came along, his girth and sheer mass was hard for the boss to ignore. He saw dollar signs in the size of the performer and booked him to win the Royal Rumble in January, then head into WrestleMania IX as the top contender to Hart's title. The only problem? Fans were still in the process of accepting Hart as a tried and true main event star while they could not have cared less about Yokozuna. The result, on paper at least, was the worst WrestleMania main event ever. Hart was the champion, yet he was presented as the underdog, hardly a way to get him over as the top dog in the industry. And Yoko, while agile for a man of his size, was typically blown up several minutes into a match. How he was going to compete in a lengthy match at 'Mania, let alone on a nightly basis, was he to win the title? With Superstars like Mr. Perfect, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Lex Luger elsewhere on the card, fans wondered what made McMahon think Yokozuna was the best option for the biggest match of the year. That question was only amplified when the legendary "Macho Man" Randy Savage was relegated to announce duties and left completely off the card that night in Las Vegas.
