10 Past WrestleMania Main Events Worse Than Reigns Vs. Triple H

5. Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - WrestleMania XI

WrestleMania XI may have been sold to the masses as the first time NFL great Lawrence Taylor would step into the squared circle, but the fact that it was in the main event slot on the show is one of the biggest absurdities in WWE history. Taylor's opponent, Bam Bam Bigelow was one of the greatest big men to ever lace a pair of boots. His athleticism was unmatched by anyone his side and he was among the most effective heels in the industry early in 1995. He was also a midcard star who had never been perceived by fans to be even remotely close to the top of the card, no matter how many times her worked Diesel or Bret Hart in house show headliners. Fans did not buy the match as a main event quality one and the result was a lack of energy surrounding the bout. Sure, Taylor proved all critics and doubters wrong with a performance that still ranks as one of the greatest by a celebrity ever, but that did not change the fact that fans had made up their minds much earlier. It was not deserving of the spot, it completely undermined the Royal Rumble match in that the winner did not compete for the WWE title in the show-closer, and it set a dangerous precedent for the future in which every celebrity that walked through the door for an actual match would command main event exposure. Thankfully, that did not become the case.
