10 Most Patriotic American WWE Stars Ever

4. Sgt. Slaughter

WWE.comWWE.comThe career of Sgt. Slaughter saw him in the role of heel and babyface throughout his career. The only time he main evented a WrestleMania was when he was a heel that turned his back on the country, but that was only done to make Hulk Hogan look like a big American hero. It worked although Slaughter has mentioned over the years that it was a very difficult story for him to do since people were sending him death threats about it. A big reason why Slaughter's heel turn genuinely pissed people off was because he was such a beloved figure in wrestling. There was a time when Hulk Hogan was the top face and Slaughter was right behind him. The fans loved the guy. He was actually popular in the mainstream as well because of his involvement with the GI Joe franchise. As a kid growing up in the 1980s, I had all the GI Joe merchandise including Slaughter related items. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUbgVzMboKs Following the story where he turned on the US, he admitted he made a mistake and talked about wanting to get his country back. This is wrestling, so of course the fans forgave him. People turn all the time, so this was no different in that regard. When Slaughter appeared through the years, he always got cheers. He's a legend because to the American audience he represented the Armed Forces very well too.
