Not only did we see the writers putting more effort into that first-round match, we’ve also seen them adding to the importance of this tag team tournament by providing us with some much-welcomed character development—most notably for the dream team of Heath Slater and Rhyno.

A few weeks back, Slater was being used exclusively as a jobber, while Rhyno didn’t even have a spot on the main roster. Yet now, thanks to Heath’s last-ditch quest to find a tag team partner, and the subsequent interview segment from his very own trailer, these two are one of the hottest acts on the entire roster right now.

At the time of writing, we still don’t know whether Slater and Rhyno will defeat the Hype Bros and earn a spot in the tournament final at Backlash. Regardless of whether or not that happens though, effective character development has ensured that fans will now be invested in these two no matter what goes down on SmackDown this week, and there’s nothing negative about that.
