10 PPV Main Events That Killed WCW

10. WCW Championship Match: Sting vs. Randy Savage - Spring Stampede 1998

The build to Sting's WCW Championship victory at Starrcade was a year in the making and should have led to the company's franchise star enjoying a sustained run with the gold. Instead, controversy led to him being stripped of the gold and a rematch with Hulk Hogan at SuperBrawl. Luckily, the brain trust running the company at that point made the correct decision on that February night by putting the Stinger over. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about April's Spring Stampede, where Sting would again be in the championship main event. His opponent? "Macho Man" Randy Savage who, like Hogan, was a staple of the nWo angle and an aging veteran whose best days were far, far behind him. It felt very much like a match designed to strengthen Sting's title reign while simultaneously setting him up for a bigger, more important match down the road. Perhaps against the surging Bill Goldberg. Instead, Savage beat the Stinger in a typical WCW main event, chocked full of run-ins from every major star who opted to take the night off rather than working an actual match. It was a colossal booking mistake that saw management switch the title for the sake of switching it, looking short term rather than long term. Sting's push was officially dead in the water and instead of becoming the hero and savior of the promotion, he was just another guy, the company cutting his legs out from underneath him and killing another star for the sake of pumping time and energy into the dying nWo faction.
