10 Problems With Booking John Cena Vs Brock Lesnar At WWE SummerSlam

4. Daniel Bryan Was Originally Supposed To Fight Brock

Plans change in wrestling all the time, and that's essentially where the writers and the creative guys really earn their money. Injuries, contract disputes and even pushes up the card can contribute to a major storyline being changed at the last minute, and it was an injury that nixed the original plans for SummerSlam this time around. If John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar seems like lazy or last-minute booking, that's probably because it is. Before his unfortunate neck injury that is still plaguing him, Daniel Bryan was the number one guy in WWE. He had the belts after WrestleMania XXX, and he looked like keeping them until at least SummerSlam. Why until SummerSlam? Because that's when he was supposed to go at it with Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. That would have been an enthralling encounter; certainly much more enthralling than the match we're presented with instead. It would have been the ultimate David vs. Goliath match; the eternal underdog in Bryan going up against the beast who broke The Undertaker's streak. The trouble is, the WWE failed to keep these plans behind closed doors, so when everything was changed to give Cena the title (and the shot against Brock at SummerSlam), it's left everyone feeling incredibly underwhelmed. Long gone are the days where all backstage gossip and plans are kept backstage; the Internet is simply rife full of rumour, conjecture and speculation - and the WWE can't seem to avoid their storyline development getting out. Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar would have carried the WWE through the summer, because there was so much intrigue and hype built up around it. The two main stars of WrestleMania XXX locking horns at another huge WWE pay-per-view would have been something special - but instead, we're left with Cena vs. Lesnar. That's a contest that doesn't exactly have the same ring as Bryan vs. Lesnar - despite how much the WWE would try and convince you otherwise.
