How this feud failed to meet expectations is still a head-scratcher for fans and management alike. AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania was a dream match few believed we would ever get to see. For once WWE were kind enough to give us what we wanted. And then… it just didn’t deliver.

I mean really, there’s just no other way to put it. It all started perfectly. Shin won the 2018 Royal Rumble, bringing tears of joy to diehard fans. The bout with AJ was given as much hype and fanfare as imaginable, built it up as the ultimate wrestling dream match.

By the time Nakamura had made his SPECTACULAR entrance on the night, everyone and their ancestors were convinced they were about to see an all-time classic go down. While the match was by all accounts very good, it simply did not live up to that hype.

What followed was even more curious. After Nakamura’s heel turn, the focus of the rivalry turned to the competitor’s balls, as AJ and Shin kept whamming each other in the testicles in a string of uninspiring matches over the coming months. Perhaps it was the weight of the expectations, perhaps it was the restrictions imposed by the WWE system. Regardless of what it was, this rivalry simply did not give us what we had hoped for.
