With the announcement of the WWE Global Cruiserweight Series coming to the WWE Network this summer, many fans grew giddy with anticipation. When additional details revealed that the company would be utilizing talent from different promotions all over the world, the excitement grew even more.

Fast forward a couple of months and WWE's newest venture of a brand split has lead to many people wondering if the cruiserweights will play a role. Obviously, the company was confident enough in this style of professional wrestling to create a WWE Network exclusive event around it, why stop there?

SmackDown used to be known for its premium in-ring content and re-introducing the cruiserweights to WWE audiences would certainly give the blue brand a shot in the arm. Going back to the days of Rey Mysterio, Edge, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero, SmackDown has always featured some of the "smaller" performers, many of whom were the pioneers of WCW's Cruiserweight division that came to prominence during the Monday Night Wars.

With the 2016 brand split, WWE has an opportunity to parlay the interest they've generated with the Global Cruiserweight Series into a reason to follow WWE's regular content by featuring the lightweights as an integral show component.
