Since the breakup of The Shield, there's been no more consistent performer in WWE than Dean Ambrose. While Roman Reigns struggled to get over, while Seth Rollins and John Cena were out injured, while Brock Lesnar was on vacation, and while Kevin Owens was in NXT, Ambrose was on Raw every week taking his lumps and becoming the most beloved man in the company.

Despite all that, Ambrose sported a seriously skewed win/loss rating, based primarily on the fact that the company used him to get other stars over. Ambrose lost to Rollins coming out of the Shield split, then lost to Rollins again when a Reigns injury forced the cancellation of his feud with "The Architect." Ambrose then lost to Bray Wyatt, and spent 2015 coming up short in his attempts to win the WWE Title.

The low point for Ambrose was Elimination Chamber 2015, where he seemed to defeat Rollins for the belt, only to have the decision overturned. One can make an argument about gauging crowd reaction to test for a future title run, but the fans were elated when he won and angry when it was reversed, and it still didn't do him any long-term good. A brief run as Intercontinental Champion was all he got.

Then, in one evening, it all changed - Ambrose won the Money in the Bank briefcase, then cashed in on Seth Rollins to finally become WWE Champion. The question is, was it too little, too late? Ambrose is still wildly popular, but where could he - and the company - be if higher-ups had given him Roman Reigns's spot eighteen months ago, when it first became clear that was the right choice?

It may be hard for Ambrose to speak candidly about his momentum - and the various damage done to it over the years - but it would be a compelling way to close out the show.
