10 Questions Vince McMahon Doesn't Want You To Ask About WWE
5. Did WWE Leave Pay Per View Too Soon?
When Vince McMahon made the decision to offer WWE specials for $9.99 on the over-the-top WWE Network, it did seem like a bold innovation and move towards the future. After all, WWE pay-per-views had been in long-term decline, the numbers reflected the fact that a move to digital subscriptions could be more lucrative. But in the first year after launching, Network numbers were dramatically short of what WWE had hoped for. Furthermore, boxing and UFC suddenly started doing PPV numbers that demonstrated the PPV format was more viable than ever. UFC has proved that over stars are all that matters, with the likes of Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor generating around a million buys a show. WWE weren't in a declining format, they had just failed to make real stars. Also consider the fact that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao did the biggest PPV buyrate ever, with 4,600,000 earlier this year. WWE look a little foolish now to think that format was antiquated, and they're now stuck offering PPV quality events for just $9.99. Do you think you left PPV too early, Vince? Is the WWE Network really the future?
