10 Rare Wrestling Contract Clauses You Never Knew

3. Creative Control

Arn Anderson had said “Creative control to me has always been a nasty word” when speaking on this contract clause.

Fans aren't enamoured with this clause, as it has the power to dictate and alter the storylines and angles they invest in on TV weekly. Hulk Hogan had ‘approval over the outcome of all wrestling matches in which he appears, wrestles and performs’ with ‘approval not to be unreasonably withheld’. Eric Bischoff has revealed on 83 Weeks that 'The Hulkster' altered Starrcade 1997's outcome with Sting, which is probably why it was so poorly received.

Bret Hart was known to have this written into his final WWE contract. You could argue it’s part of what led to the Montreal Screwjob taking place - he had complete creative freedom in the last 30 days of working for the company, which is how he was able to reject orders from Vince McMahon to drop the WWE title to Shawn Michaels. Vince believed he had no other choice than to screw Bret out of the belt at Survivor Series. It was the last time McMahon would ever put anything creative related written into a contract. Bret had it throughout his entire run in WCW too.
