9. Shoehorned Into Heel Role
Del Rio excelled as a babyface during his blockbuster run on the independent circuit throughout much of the last year. As Alberto El Patron, working predominantly in AAA and its sister promotion Lucha Underground, Del Rio garnered incredible reactions from fans who saw him as a returning hero, having survived being chewed up and spat out by the mainstream. This role fit Del Rio nicely, allowing him the opportunity to rev up crowds with ease and produce his most exciting ring work. This isn't happening in WWE, where Del Rio has been forced into an ill-fitting heel role. WWE crowds naturally wanted to cheer Del Rio on his return, particularly as he arrived by dethroning the polarising John Cena, but WWE has simply tried to pick up where they left off with Del Rio as a heel, with the sole addition being he now has Zeb Colter by his side. WWE spent big money to bring back Del Rio, arguably because they have been desperate to find a major new hispanic star since the departure of Rey Mysterio and failure of the original Sin Cara. Kalisto isn't yet ready for the monster push, whereas the veteran Del Rio is ideal for the role. With that in mind, it's baffling that WWE has opted to cast him as a heel. Speaking of money...
