WWE caught most of us by surprise with their decision to make Samoa Joe number one contender to Brock Lesnar's Universal Championship. There were safer options like Reigns or Rollins, but WWE chose Joe, the former NXT Champion who hadn't been living up to his potential on Monday Night Raw.
Since then however, Joe has been on fire, coming across as a legitimate threat both on the mic and through his actions. Their segments have been fuelled by ruthless aggression on the part of both men, and the anticipation is going to be palpable going into the main event of July 9th.
Even if Lesnar's title seems safe, it should not be forgotten that this is a legitimate dream match. Both men have acted as credible badasses wherever they have gone, but few ever believed they would cross paths before their primes had passed.
Not only are they colliding, but they are doing so in the main event of a, albeit terribly-named, WWE PPV. WWE are clearly aware of the magnitude surrounding this match-up, and rather than feed an ex-TNA guy to their WWE thoroughbred, Samoa Joe has been allowed to make himself look incredibly dangerous. The dream match is on.
