8. Even A Terrible Heel Turn Couldn't Break Him

Lord knows WCW tried to break Bill Goldberg's bond with the fans.

Vince Russo's decision to attempt a heel turn with Goldberg was something different. It was also never going to work when the promotion's hardcore fans were looking for anything to cling onto as an example of why they still believed in the company. When Russo had Goldberg go rogue in the Summer of 2000, it felt like whipping the rug out from underneath those people.

In the end, it didn't work. Fans couldn't see Goldberg as anything other than a creation they had been part of and refused to boo him heavily. That's the sign of a strong babyface right there; Goldberg was a smash-mouth lone wolf who let fans live vicariously through his kick-ass ways. They didn't want to jeer him and he didn't want to be jeered.

WCW's reliance on booking quick alignment changes was never going to work with Goldberg. He had built a connection with fans that was too strong, and he did this in less than 3 years.
