10 Reasons Spike TV Will Cancel TNA Impact Wrestling
6. Advertising Rates For Wrestling Are Bad
Historically, even when it's been in its hottest periods, wrestling has never been able to attract the sort of top dollar advertisers than other sports leagues like the NFL or the NBA do, nor do they grab the same high-end ad rates of dramatic shows with comparable ratings. It's just a fact of life that advertisers view the wrestling audience as a low-class demographic who aren't worthy of their precious advertising dollars. Whether that's true or not is another issue entirely, but the fact remains that wrestling programs, WWE shows included, command much cheaper rates than their competition. That doesn't create a lot of incentive for a network to acquire any wrestling programming of any kind when they can take in higher rates for lesser rated shows. It's a reminder of the demise of WCW, because, while still getting pretty good ratings for cable, Time-Warner had no desire to have wrestling on their channels.
