10 Reasons The 1990 Royal Rumble Is The Best Of All Time
6. Managers At Ringside
This was the first Rumble in which managers were allowed to stay ringside while one of their clients was in the ring. This of course meant that the ringside area was populated by some of the most iconic heels of the late 20th century. Bobby Heenan, Sensational Sherri, Slick and Mr. Fuji were all involved at some point, and you can add Virgil’s name to that list if you so desire.
Managers are a dying breed in professional wrestling, and the added value they can bring was clear in this match. Each of them seemed like they were there for tactical value first and foremost, strategising or shouting instructions as opposed to riling up the crowd or looking pretty. They also kept the referees busy on the outside, allowing for unsavoury tactics from their charges.
When Andre the Giant eliminated The Warlord from the match, Mr. Fuji got up on the apron to shake his cane at the Eighth Wonder of the World. Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan soon dragged him down, and the two had a magical stand-off outside the ring. The action inside the ring was non-stop, but the seconds on the outside made sure that there was no let-up there, either.
