This was the most congruent Royal Rumble in the history of the match. The first Rumble was an experiment, while the second one tinkered with the form. This was when everything came together in a perfect storm. This was 58 minutes and 46 seconds of perfectly timed action, stories blending into stories to create a flawless whole.

Ted DiBiase’s early flurry was ended by his main rival, before another major heel came in to keep the bad guys on top. Roberts was in an incredibly vulnerable position before another big star arrived to save the day. It doesn’t take an expert to put this together, but it helps if attention is given.

With just a handful of exceptions, the entries for the Rumble alternated between face and heel. There was no unnecessary filling of the ring, no waiting for a major spot and no dead air. The early batch of stars gave way to the middle portion of the match where the giants dominated, before the two megastars of the time arrived for an iconic showdown.

Their issues (or egos) allowed the heels to get the upper hand, before the number one face in the company overcame the odds against arguably the top two heels. This was the Royal Rumble puzzle coming together in beautiful fashion.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
