WWE's reaction to competition and/or low ratings has always been to book controversy.

Back in the '90s, they reacted to WCW's rise by turning the dial up on raunchy acts like Sable, Sunny, DX and Steve Austin. When TNA looked like they might be onto something, they responded by blowing up Vinnie Mac's limo and (later, to combat a ratings sag) McMahon literally gave away millions of dollars.

Quality of storylines doesn't necessarily matter if it gets people talking. That way of thinking is, seemingly, WWE law, and there's no reason to think that'll change next year. So, start palming those foreheads now, because they'll have more trashy TV like this ongoing Rusev, Lana and Bobby Lashley sex triangle story and the attempted murder of Roman Reigns up their sleeves.

WWE's response to AEW's existence will likely be soap-opera heavy. They want to court controversy; the most important thing for Vince has always been that folks are talking about his brand. Who cares if 90% of it is negative? The marks will love it.
