10 Reasons Why DDP Was The Original People’s Champ Of Wrestling
1. The Long Road
When it comes to ascensions in the business of pro wrestling, no-one has come further than Diamond Dallas Page. Over the course of his ten year tenure in World Championship Wrestling, DDP quite literally achieved everything there was to achieve in the company, bagging every possible accolade along the way.
Debuting as manager of The Fabulous Freebirds and heading up his own stable of wrestlers known collectively as The Diamond Exchange, DDP would quickly pull double-duty by also spending time at the commentary booth. From there, he began wrestling and would go on to win every championship the company had to offer.
From TV Title and US Championship to Tag Team straps and the coveted Big Gold belt itself, even winning the Lord of the Ring tournament along the way. Add to that a 1997 “PWI Feud of the Year” with Randy Savage and top six placement in the PWI 500 from 1997 to 1999 and you have yourself a pretty impressive resume.
Long-time fans of DDP will have seen him grow from non-wrestling manager to World Heavyweight Champion in less than a decade - a near-impossible feat and one that made him a shoe-in for the WWE Hall of Fame. Not too bad for a former nightclub owner from New Jersey.
