10 Reasons Why WWE Fans Are Sick Of Nostalgia
1. The Older You Get...
...the wiser you get to the darkness behind the curtain.
Hulk Hogan's rumoured returned to the fold will undoubtedly tear the roof off the Manhattan Center during the anniversary celebrations on the Royal Rumble go-home RAW - but his histrionic fan appeals may become jarring, with the knowledge of why we've not seen them in years lurking in the subconscious. Jerry Lawler is pencilled in to call the action, but there's a reason he no longer calls it on a full-time basis; his enthusiasm for modern wrestling is dead, and his recent takes on the sexual harassment scandal were, in a word, putrid - even more so than his calls. Triple H, to many fans, isn't one of the brightest stars of a beloved era; he is a glory hog who has been around the game for too long.
These men were childhood heroes, but as we grow older, their flaws become more apparent, more difficult to reconcile. Nostalgia provides fans with a comfort blanket. As such, it is predicated on warmth. It is difficult to tap into that sentiment for longer than the moment - itself a problem for a company super-serving endless content - knowing what we know now.
That Manhattan Center RAW may age this article more than its subjects in a months' time - but it cannot possibly yield anything beyond a spot of short-term attention, irrespective of the direction of one's moral compass.
