10 Reasons WWE Royal Rumble 1992 Is Still The Best
3. The Exact Rules Weren't Quite Established
Flying down to the ring at number twenty one in the draw, The Macho Man Randy Savage approached this Royal Rumble with his usual trademark intensity. If we're being honest though its very hard to blame him as his arch nemesis of the time Jake 'The Snake' Roberts was standing in the ring.
Only a couple of months beforehand on an episode of WWF Superstars Jake had unleashed a cobra onto Savage which had in turn sank its fangs deep into Macho Man's bicep. It's one of the most startlingly graphic segments in wrestling around the early nineties. Savage gained a small amount of revenge in this match by eliminating Roberts fairly quickly but, with absolute fury in his eyes, he carries on the attack by hurling himself over the top rope as well. This leads to a fair amount of confusion between Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon as they both consider Savage to have eliminated himself by letting both his feet touch the arena floor. Referees gather around, rapid discussion is had and you have to imagine Vince McMahon is blowing a gasket backstage before any of us knew that was a thing. The precedence that Andre The Giant had set previously seems to be ignored.
After a few moments Randy Savage re-enters the ring and carries on as normal. He would go on to have a stint lasting just over twenty minutes in the match and be eliminated by Ric Flair and Sid Justice so it turned out fine.
It's perhaps not as bad as twelve months later when Savage goes for a pinfall attempt on Yokozuna during the 1993 Rumble which leads to him being bundled over the ropes as the final elimination. Perhaps Savage was soaring with eagles when the rules were explained?
