10 Reasons WWE's 2020 Was Better Than 2019

7. Low-Key Authority Figures

Authority figures are one WWE trope that never goes away.

Ever since the success of Steve Austin and Mr McMahon, creative has relied on the tired plot device to get talent over, some who didn't need an additional push in the first place. Each time the angle is abused, it is rendered more meaningless.

After enduring Constable Corbin's reign in 2018, there was a short reprieve the following year. However, it came with its own inherent problem: who called the shots? On occasion, a random executive showed up to reinforce a ruling, but largely, things just happened for reasons unknown.

In 2020, however, WWE has managed to get the best of both worlds with Adam Pearce. Finally, an on-screen personality runs the shows rather than some anonymous wizard.

Yet, Pearce has been rather low-key compared to his predecessors. Whereas previous authority figures made themselves a focal point, such as the McMahons and The Authority, Pearce has mostly laid low, occasionally stepping in to direct the course of a feud or stop wrestlers from killing each other.

It hasn't been until recently that Pearce flexed some muscle. Still, he hasn't been hogging up the first 30 minutes of each show. As long as his character isn't treated as the main act, his role as showrunner may be welcomed for some time to come.
