10 Reasons WWE's Cruiserweight Division Isn't Working

6. The Watered-Down Style

Those hoping to see the same style of wrestling that we enjoyed in the Cruiserweight Classic on RAW have been greatly disappointed. Whilst the pace hasn't slowed down to a complete halt, it has gone down a notch from the 32-man competition, and the crowd responses are suffering as a result.

To date, the live audiences have only really responded to the odd piece of impressive athleticism. If the unique selling point of a division is the style of wrestling, does it not guarantee failure to curb that style from the get-go? It makes absolutely no sense.

By handcuffing the performers you are only ever going to be shooting yourself in the foot. It all adds up to misplaced paranoia on the part of the agents too, as the men they have signed are clearly wise enough to work to their crowd. Brian Kendrick and Rich Swann aren't exactly going to go out and work a Jack Evans vs. Teddy Hart highspot extravaganza.

Even so, just by hinting at restrictions, WWE has hampered the cruiserweight division from the start.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
