10 Reasons You Need To Start Watching Impact Again
5. New Storytelling Approaches
As we’ve seen with Lucha Underground, and even in WWE with content like the Ultimate Deletion, wrestling has evolved as a storytelling medium. For traditionalists, it might be hard to fully embrace this multi-camera, heavily post-produced approach. But what promotions are currently offering is certainly a bold new take on how they develop their narrative structure. Impact has embraced this creative freedom and it has helped their show out exponentially.
The promotion kicked things off during the Billy Corgan/Dave Lagana era, where fans were treated to the genesis of the Broken Universe along with characters like Rosemary, Bram and Decay getting supernatural videos to provide them with more depth (let's just maybe forget that Rosemary’s brother is a tree). While the company continued delivering similar material post-Corgan, it wasn’t quite as effective. Until now.
As noted, L.A.X. routinely has realistic and edgy videos that air from their clubhouse. Sami Callihan had a stellar performance where he beat up Konnan in a desolate park. OVE continues to terrorise Eddie and Alisha Edwards outside of the arena. Even Jimmy Jacobs and Kongo Kong cutting promos in a well-lit backstage area feels like an upgrade over the past year.
While Impact doesn’t have a fraction of the budget WWE has to play with, they’ve taken a more creative approach and have been making the most of what they have.
