For many fans of a certain age, Stone Cold Steve Austin attacking Vince McMahon in the hospital was the absolute pinnacle of the Attitude Era. Much of that era hasn't aged well but Austin's attack on a prone Vince is every bit as magnificent today as it was back in 1998. Recreating that magic is impossible, but Stephanie McMahon revealed recently that there was almost a modern version of the famous segment.

During her pregnancy, Becky Lynch pitched the idea that someone would attack her in the maternity ward. Unsurprisingly, the idea was turned down. The optics of a pregnant woman being attacked from behind aren't great, are they? Let's rephrase that; the optics of a pregnant woman being attacked from behind are absolutely disgusting.

The pitch does shine a light on many modern problems that WWE has made for itself. Back in 1998, the hero was the one doing the attacking, causing more shame and humiliation for the evil heel. In 2021? Well, the babyface would be the one to be attacked. What's more, who on WWE's roster could credibly portray the evil heel here? Lacey Evans? Dana Brooke? Nia freakin' Jax?

Some ideas are best left in the bin.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
