10 Ridiculous Finishes To WWE And WCW World Title Matches

8. Starrcade 1997 - Sting vs Hollywood Hogan For The WCW World Heavyweight Championship

The nWo had made WCW programming must-see for the latter half of '96 and '97 but it started to flounder from a lack from legitimate competition who could pose a real threat to Hollywood Hogan and his entourage. This was the case until Sting started his transformation from a colorful child friendly character, into a mysterious avenger inspired heavily by the 1994 film The Crow. Sting continued to attack the Hogan and the NWO, until he finally spoke and voiced his demand for a world title match at Starrcade. Nick Patrick, who had been alligned with the nWo in the past, was chosen as the referee for the match. All was going well until Hogan pinned Sting after a leg drop and got the 1-2-3. Bret Hart came down to the ring and restarted the match, claiming that Sting had been screwed because of a fast count by ref Nick Patrick. The problem with this is, he hadn't. Nick Patrick missed his cue, meaning Sting seemed to lose clean to Hogan and Bret Hart had restarted this match for absolutely no reason. Sting and Hogan was supposed to be a clash of titans, but it instead it went out with a whimper because they tried to over complicate things with a needless, flashy finish. The result dented Sting's momentum and made him an afterthought, instead WCW chose to focus on Goldberg in the coming years.
