7. Edge The Deaf-Mute

Despite going on to have a Hall of Fame career, it didn't immediately fall into place for Edge. In fact, a solid argument could be made that he was getting closer to permanent mid-card purgatory until the Lita scandal broke. Still, that would have looked like heaven if Vince Russo's original ideas had been followed through on.

Russo wanted Edge and Val Venis to be the New Midnight Express, under the names 'Adorable Adam' and 'Sensual Sean'. The Canadian duo shot this down, on account of the fact that anything coming with the prefix 'New' tends to be a giant failure.

Russo's next idea was to portray Edge as a deaf-mute, as Vince didn't think that Edge had any promo abilities whatsoever, bro. Luckily this wasn't followed through on, and we got the raging Edge instead.

The idea of being a deaf-mute wrestler was also bandied about for CM Punk before he made his debut in the company. Yes, WWE wanted arguably the greatest talker of a generation to be mute.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
