5. Hulk O'Hogan

How would professional wrestling look today if Hulk Hogan had followed the advice of Vince McMahon Sr. upon signing with the World Wide Wrestling Federation in 1979? McMahon changed Hulk's name from Terry 'The Hulk' Boulder to Hulk Hogan, and gave him two bottles of red hair dye in the process.

The reason behind the dye? Hogan was to colour his hair a shade of rust and portray an Irish American wrestler. Wrestling was all about the demographics you see, and the WWWF had someone for the Italian Americans (Bruno Sammartino), someone for the Polish Americans (Ivan Putski), someone for the Puerto Rican Americans (Pedro Morales) etc etc.

Hogan was to be the great Irish American hope. Freddie Blassie was tasked with helping out with the hair dye job, and when Hogan poured it away Blassie was convinced he would be fired. For whatever reason, Vince Sr. relented.

"I am a real Irishman, fight for the rights of every man." Nah, it doesn't really work.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
