Removing his trademark mask in June of the same year, Kane faced Rob Van Dam at SummerSlam 2003. Previously, the pair had been an odd couple tag-team, but WWE clearly felt they needed to make changes to the Kane character in order for it to survive. The 'new' Kane had a renewed sense of sadism, not to mention an entirely menacing look.

The match at SummerSlam was billed as a No Holds Barred effort, going on right before the main event Elimination Chamber war for the World Heavyweight Championship. That served to hurt Van Dam vs. Kane, most people seem to remember the Elimination Chamber - and Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar - when thinking back to the event.

If the No Holds Barred situation has been forgotten by anyone, or has just never been seen, it merits a watch. Van Dam was still quick and nimble at this point, and the refreshed feel to Kane's character really helps the narrative of the match.

Perhaps it could have been longer (Kane vs. RVD only lasted a shade over ten minutes), but it warrants more attention regardless of brevity.
