Everyone knows that Daniel Bryan took the long-road to WWE, first rising up the ranks in Ring of Honor - where he made a name for himself as one of the indie scene's most promising talents - before joining Vince McMahon's empire in 2010.

Yet it's also common knowledge that a young Bryan had friends in high places - namely, Shawn Michaels, from whom he received training in his teenage years. All of that is to say that he basically had an "in" with WWE, and was under contract with them, albeit via a developmental territory, as early as 2001.

And, in his 2015 autobiography, the SmackDown GM would reveal that he was nearly brought in as part of a new cruiserweight division, aimed at pulling in some of the viewers disappointed by the ongoing collapse of WCW. If that was his "sliding doors" moment, then - all things considered - he probably took the right course.
