10 Shocking WCW Plans You Won't Believe Almost Happened
4. Tank Abbott As World Champion
If there's one thing that can be said in favour of this entry, it's that Tank Abbott was at least physically involved in the WCW product. Unlike Judy Bagwell, Abbott took bumps and competed in matches. Even so, he did so to little fanfare from fans, and failed to truly get over as a professional wrestler. In fact, Tank simply didn't grasp the basic mechanics of a pro wrestling bout. Severely limited as an in-ring talent, it's nonetheless true that Vince Russo pitched an idea to make Tank Abbot WCW's World Champion. The promotion were scrambling for ideas to fill up time on the upcoming Souled Out Pay-Per-View in January, 2000. One of Russo's big proposals was making the mid-card shoot fighter the top titleholder. The writer's logic for such a move was because of Tank's legitimate fighting background. It's probably true that he could have beaten up many wrestlers on the roster for real, but that didn't matter to the fans. If WCW had made Tank Abbott champion, many more fans would have tuned out far earlier than they did from programming.
