10 Shocking WWE Angles That Crossed The Line
7. Hawk's Demons
The Attitude Era was legendary for edgy angles and blurring the lines of what was real and what wasn't. While this made for great TV, it also had its drawbacks, and some angles were a little close to home for certain superstars.
In 1998, the Legion of Doom were still flying the flag for tag team wrestling with their trademark brand of bullish badassery. However, in the interest of giving the LOD a meaty storyline, the WWF decided to make Hawk's real-life drug and alcohol problems part of the show.
The basis of the angle was that the Legion of Doom was falling apart due to Hawk's increasing unreliability, necessitating the addition of a third member, Puke (aka Darren 'Droz' Drozdov). With Droz acting as a replacement for the inebriated Hawk, the ousted third wheel of the equation descended into kayfabe alcoholism and depression.
The storyline reached its climax when an impaired Hawk, supposedly suicidal, scaled the TitanTron, with Droz in pursuit, presumably to save Hawk from himself. However, Droz pushed Hawk off, leaving him to fall from the fatal height of the Tron.
The whole angle was far more real than many people realised and the personal nature of the storyline led Animal and Hawk to leave the WWF soon afterwards.
