10 Shocking WWE Betrayals

6. Sgt. Slaughter Betrays America - 1990

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yru-bIqX0WQ It is one thing for one WWE Superstar to betray another. It is an entirely other thing for a Superstar to betray an entire country but that is exactly what happened in 1990 when Sgt. Slaughter returned to Vince McMahon's promotion and pledged allegiance not to the flag of the United States, but to the flag of Iraq and the tyrannical ruler Saddam Hussein. It was a complete 180-degree turn by Slaughter, who had been an American hero for so long that even US President Richard Nixon held him in high regard. His betrayal crushed the man men, women and children who supported him throughout his career and followed him to G.I. Joe, where he became the first real life character to have a Joe named after him. Slaughter's despicable words about the country he called home infuriated the American citizens whose loved ones were off fighting in the Middle East to preserve Kuwait's sovereignty and other interests in the area. He quickly became the most despised man in professional wrestling. So much so that threats to his safety and well-being were not uncommon. By the time he captured the WWE Championship in January 1991 at the Royal Rumble, fans were ready to see the turncoat get his comeuppance. He would, at WrestleMania VII, courtesy of new American hero Hulk Hogan.
