Retired from March 29, 1987 to May 12, 1989

No-one can imagine the early years of WrestleMania without remembering Rowdy Roddy Piper. Main-eventing the inaugural edition of the show and one third of WrestleMania 2, Piper was a pioneer of the Rock 'n' Wrestling Era and, until the third 'Show Of Shows', a career heel the fans loved to hate.

In the lead-up to the event on March 29th 1987, Piper made it clear that he wanted to retire from professional wrestling to pursue a career in acting, starring in the cult-classic They Live in 1988.

Before this, Hot Rod competed in his official retirement match against "Adorable" Adrian Adonis in a hair vs. hair match, during which Piper was face for the first time in his WWF tenure. He won and proceeded to shave Adonis' head with the help of Brutus Beefcake, before leaving the arena to a standing ovation from the 93,000 (disputed) fans.

It was over two years before Piper returned to WWF, facing Ted DiBiase at a run of house shows before beginning his pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship and continuing to compete in both WWF and WCW, as well as the indies until his final recorded match in August 2011 in a tag team match facing two men we'll see later on in this list.
