Edge made his WWE debut in 1998, and for the next year, was the focal point in a strange storyline involving Gangrel and Christian. Though initially Edge feuded with his estranged brother and the mysterious vampire, they soon formed an alliance without explanation. Dubbed "The Brood," they were an ill-defined trio, but their killer entrance and in-ring ability made them popular midcarders.

Eventually, the alliance split apart, and Edge and Christian went into tag team competition. Still, at a July 22, 1999 house show in Toronto, WWE was shorthanded and called upon the hometown hero. Initially, Ken Shamrock was meant to challenge Jeff Jarrett for the Intercontinental Title, but when he had travel issues, the company decided to make the best of Edge's substitution, letting him beat Jarrett for the belt. Though the win was initially overturned because Edge wasn't the planned opponent, it was ultimately allowed to stand.

Just under a day later, though, Edge had to put the belt on a line in a rematch against Jarrett at Fully Loaded, and Jarrett reclaimed it. Edge would have to wait two more years for another singles title.
