10 Strange Wrestling Debuts That Left Fans Bewildered
4. Mantaur
A recent report indicated that one of the reasons for the WWE's declining viewership is that the current product is seen as "too cartoonish". To which we say, be grateful you whippersnappers didn't grow up watching wrestling in the mid-90s. Characters like the Goon, Phantasio and Bastion Booger (a character so embarassing there isn't a single video of him on WWE's youtube channel) mean there's a reason WWE's New Generation is seen as a dork age in wrestling history.
Yet even these gimmicks were eclipsed by the sheer insanity of Mantaur. Mantaur was a wresling minotaur, except he wasn't - he was just some guy who wore a bull's head on his way to the ring and shouted "moo!" during his matches.
Even WWE seemed aware that the character was a total dud - how else can you explain the camera repeatedly cutting to an utterly perplexed crowd during his in-ring debut? Every member of the audience seems to have the exact same look of bewilderment - tilted head, raised eyebrows and mouth slightly open, as they collectively wonder why they spent their hard-earned cash on this crap.
You may be wondering - how did the New Generation fail to draw when it had talent like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Diesel and Razor Ramon to call on? Simple. Not even their powers combined could escape the black hole of creative ineptitude that spawned the mighty Mantaur.
