10 Strange WWE Gimmick Matches

8. Asylum Match

While this could simply be categorized as a hardcore cage match, we’ll grant it an entry because of some the unique weapons that were part of it.

WWE’s asylum match was so named because of Dean Ambrose, who was hosting his own talk show during this time, the Ambrose Asylum (his nickname is the Lunatic Fringe, get it?). That show had replaced Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel, leading to an ongoing feud between them, which could only be settled in an asylum match, which was basically a cage match with some weapons tangentially related to their feud (Mitch the plant, anyone?).

The match itself was disappointing, with Jericho and Ambrose slowly climbing for the weapons, only for the end to come when Jericho was dropped onto a pile of thumbtacks. Unlike some other gimmick matches, this clearly hasn’t become Ambrose’s signature match, as it hasn’t been seen again.
