10 Strange WWE Gimmick Matches

2. Duchess Of Queensbury Match

If this sounds absurd, it should. But it also involved Chris Jericho and William Regal at Backlash 2001, so it also was awesome in a way.

While the Marquess of Queensbury rules applies to boxing, the Duchess of Queensbury Rules match was a Regal-inspired bout where the rules were only known to Regal and the duchess. (Yes, there was a duchess at Backlash to enforce the rules, why do you ask?)

Of course, that means that there really weren’t any rules – at least not any that favored Jericho. Y2J got the upper hand a couple times, only for the duchess to rule that the match must continue. At one point, she waved off a pinfall because the round had ended, then she nullified a tapout because submissions didn’t count. Finally, the match ended with Regal getting the victory.

Jericho got a small measure of revenge by putting the duchess in the Walls of Jericho. No doubt, that had to run afoul of the rules as well.
