The first ever Hell In A Cell match took place at the In Your House: Badd Blood Pay-Per-View in October, 1997. Designed to further the feud between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, the demonic structure has become infamous in wrestling circles, usually signifying that extreme violence and bloodshed are around the corner.

As years have progressed, and WWE has become more sanitised, claret hasn't been prevalent during these confined encounters, making them somewhat less impactful than they once were. With that in mind, given that the match quickly became one of the trademark ways to blow off a major rivalry in the company, it's surprising to think that it took up until 2009 for someone to win a title during a Hell In A Cell bout.

It wasn't until the opening match of the first ever Hell In A Cell PPV that The Undertaker became the first wrestler to capture championship gold inside the steel prison. Defeating CM Punk, 'Taker bagged himself the World Heavyweight Title, breaking the run of title defenses taking place inside the cell.
