10 Strangest WWE Trademarks

2. The Goombas

In February 2003, WWE filed an application to trademark the name 'The Goombas'. The name was going to be used for a performer, or at least that is the only plausible use for such a name I can think of. It was trademarked around the same time as 'WWE Divas After Dark', 'Big Poppa Pump' and 'The Legacy', which is a decent little cross-section of how strange wrestling is.

'The Goombas' sounds suspiciously like it was going to be some sort of weird inbred backwoods hick faction of tag team. Think The Godwinns mixed with the Burchills maybe. In truth, this is only peculiar because it never came together, but there are always good reasons for such a thing to happen.

Saying that, the goombas are a species of sentient mushrooms in the Mario franchise, and a group of male cheerleaders arrived just a year after this trademark died, so maybe The Goombas wasn't such a bad idea.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
