10 Superstar-Centric Gimmick Wrestling Matches
1. Casket Match - The Undertaker
The Undertaker's Casket Match takes top billing here as it is the first real character-based gimmick match that I remember. 'Taker entered our world as a zombie mortician professional wrestler, and as such morbidity followed him around like a bad smell. That's part and parcel of death, so that makes sense.
The premise was simple: beat your opponent into such bad shape that you can easily roll them into a casket, shut the lid, and pick up the victory. These matches would usually be preceded by weeks of vignettes showing 'Taker building special caskets for his victims, playing up the whole 'death expert' thing.
So how has Undertaker done in Casket Matches? Unsurprisingly, he has a great record, going 12-5 in his favour. It was also a Casket Match that saw Shawn Michaels take the bump that caused him to retire for the very first time in 1998.
The very first Casket Match? Funnily enough, this took place way back in the 1970s, as Dusty Rhodes defeated Ivan Koloff in what was then-called a Coffin Match. To win you had to roll your opponent into a coffin after pinning them, and then nail it shut. Times have changed, thankfully.
In the modern age Lucha Underground has somehow perfected the gimmick, in their must-see Grave Consequences matches.
